African local governments have an essential role to play in sustainable energy transitions, yet their involvement in sustainable energy planning and implementation is severely inadequate. In response to local and international demands for sustainable energy development, the Ghana government has made efforts to mainstream renewable/sustainable energies into national policies (e.g.SEforALL, GSGDA II, EREP, etc.). While these efforts at the national level have been widely acknowledged, it remains unclear the extent to which local governments participate and mainstream renewable/sustainable energies into their local development plans. This project thus aims to: 1. To ascertain how key actors at the local level engage in sustainable energy development in Wa municipality. 2. To examine how sustainable energy planning can be integrated into local government plans in Ghana. 3. To assess the institutional capacity of local government agencies to undertake sustainable energy planning and implementation at in Wa municipality.
