Jua Jamii, one of the decathletes of the FIRST Solar Decathlon Africa competition organized by the US Department of Energy together with the government-backed Moroccan Research Institute in Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN) under the aegis of the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Sustainable Development. We are a multidisciplinary team of African students working in an interdisciplinary approach. Jua Jamii is composed of 15 (and growing) talented young Africans enrolled in various Master’s degree courses at the Pan African University Institute of Water and Energy Sciences (PAUWES), the University of Tlemcen in Algeria and The National University of Lesotho (NUL). Our team members come from the eight different countries in Africa representing all five sub-regions of the continent: North, South, East, West, and Central. We designed, constructed and operated highly energy self-sustainable smart Jua houses powered by solar energy while embracing the unique African Architecture at the Solar Decathlon Africa. Our vision is that the Jua Houses will help bridge the housing deficit and contribute to the development of a sustainable and energy-efficient building sector in Africa.
