Lecturer: Dr. Zafar Adeel also served as the Chair of UN-Water from January 2010 to February 2012, a group that coordinates water-related work in 30 United Nations organizations and a number of international water organizations. Presently, he co-chairs a UN-Water Task Force on Water Security. He has served with UNU since 1998 and holds a Master’s Degree from Iowa State University (1992) and a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University (1995). He served as a Senior Engineer at GeoTrans Inc. (USA) for a number of years before joining UNU. He has experience in a range of water and environmental issues, including monitoring and control of water pollution, water management in dry areas, solutions to industrial environmental problems, modelling of environmental systems, and environmental policy formulation. Abstract: The world community has developed a new social and economic development paradigm as part of the post-2015 agenda. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been almost finalized and will be approved in September 2015. Research work undertaken by UNU-INWEH and its partner organizations has analyzed this emerging agenda since 2012. While the focus of this research has been on water-related SDGs and corresponding targets, many of the findings are generic and applicable across the board. A particular focus of this presentation is the study concluded earlier this year which critically analyzed the situation in ten countries (Bangladesh, Bolivia, Canada, Indonesia, South Korea, Pakistan, Singapore, Uganda, Vietnam and Zambia). It provides a comparative analysis of the countries’ aspirations and SDGs (the World We Want) against the ground realities and challenges (the World We Have).
